Travers Stakes horse racing betting preview | News Article by SportsBettingOnline.ag

The Mid-Summer Derby ushers in the final big-money horse racing events of the season, and this year’s Travers Stakes is no exception. The buzz in Saratoga, New York is at peak levels this week as Triple Crown champion American Pharoah takes the track Saturday.

Oddsmakers have the now-legendary horse as a -500 favorite and that price will likely go up as racing fans and hardcore horse handicappers look to get their money down on the famed three year old. But, American Pharoah isn’t the only horse to watch this weekend. Here’s a betting breakdown of the action in the 146th Travers Stakes to help with your online horse wagering:

Odds against AP?
Believe it or not, only one other Triple Crown winner has gone on to win the Travers Stakes. Whirlwind did so in 1941, but Saratoga has taken on the mantle of the “Graveyard of Champions”. Legendary horses Man ‘o War, Gallant Fox, and the great Secretariat have all fallen as big faves in New York. On top of that, American Pharoah’s trainer Bob Baffert doesn’t have a great track record in the Travers, going 1 for 5 in the late-season stakes race. American Pharoah will run from gate No. 2 this weekend.

Who’s got next?
According to oddsmakers, American Pharoah’s closest competition comes from Frosted, which if you look at the odds may not seem like much of a threat. He’s sitting in the No. 6 post and is paying out at 6/1 for the Travers Stakes. Frosted finished second in the Jim Dandy at Saratoga on August 1 and was in the hunt during the Triple Crown events, finishing fourth in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Belmont.

Ice Ice Baby
If you looking for a live long shot – quite honestly, everyone but American Pharoah could fit that role – look no further than Keen Ice, who is paying out at 12/1 for the Travers Stakes. He finished second behind AP in the Haskell Invitational and has a Hall of Famer on his back in jockey Kent Desormeaux, who says Keen Ice is peaking at the right time. He finished third in the Belmont Stakes and had a breakout performance at the Haskell, fighting his way from the back with a late charge.
