In order to quench the thirst of football bettors over the summer months, sports gambling websites post early lines on college football Week 1.

These markets usually see a flurry of early money from smart bettors, quickly adjusting their numbers, before sitting stagnant until the season officially kicks off. Week 1 is just around the corner, so here are the games which have seen that sharp play and large line moves throughout the summer:

Georgia Southern at Louisiana State
Bookies opened LSU as a monster 25.5-point home favorite for this “tune up” game versus lowly Georgia Southern. But after GSU’s starting quarterback Shai Werts and starting defensive end Quan Griffin were suspended by the team for an arrest on August 2, this line shot up to Tigers -30.

Werts threw for just under 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns last season but does his damage on the ground, amounting 15 rushing scores and 908 yards on the ground in 2018. Louisiana State is one of the best defensive teams in the country and should beat up on their Sun Belt opponent in Week 1.

Fresno State at USC
The Southern California Trojans opened as 9.5-point home chalk for this season opener but have drawn the bulk of the early action and now sit as 13.5-point favorites hosting the Bulldogs on August 31.

The Trojans still has plenty of work to do before this matchup with Fresno State, namely figuring out who will be their starting quarterback. J.T. Daniels, Matt Fink, Jack Sears and Kedon Slovis are all in the running. The Bulldogs are no joke and beat Pac-12 teams in UCLA and Arizona State (bowl game) last season.

Notre Dame at Louisville
The Louisville Cardinals were the laughing stock of power conference college football last season and managed to cover the spread just once in 12 games in 2018. Bobby Petrino was shown the door and new head coach Scott Satterfield knows all about being an underdog after his time at Appalachian State. But bettors are soured on the Cardinals and have moved this spread from Notre Dame -16.5 and -20.5.

The Irish were a CFP Final Four program last season and are one of the most popular – and public bets – in the country. Notre Dame is expected to be among the Top 10 teams in the nation again in 2019, so this spread could continue to climb once all those Golden Domers come in on the Fighting Irish on September 2.

Duke vs Alabama
Alabama will be in a bad mood for its Week 1 game with Duke after losing the National Championship to Clemson last January. The Crimson Tide are stacked on both sides of the ball, which is why books first installed the SEC giant as a 30.5-point neutral-site favorite at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. That spread has since hiked to -33 with bettors jumping on Nick Saban and company.

Duke is undergoing a changing of the guard at quarterback, with three-year starter Daniel Jones jumping to the pros and leaving the offense in the hands of senior Quentin Harris. Alabama is not the team you want to “find your rhythm against” after ranking fifth in the country in total sacks last season.
